They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Excerpt from For The Fallen by Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)
Also please visit this ANZAC site which shows the memorial place at ANZAC Cove by the Turkish government.
These are the words of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Turkey's first President, at the Anzac Cove.
Those heroes that shed their blood
and lost their lives…
you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.
Therefore rest in peace.
There is no difference between the Johnnies
and the Mehmets where they lie side by side
here in this country of ours…
You the mothers
who sent their sons from far away countries,
wipe away your tears.
Your sons are now lying in our bosom
and are in peace.
Having lost their lives on this land
they have become our sons as well.
