Firies promote flood safety

THE Queensland Fire and Rescue Service is sending a strong message to all Toowoomba residents this storm and cyclone season: "If it's flooded, forget it".

Each year, innocent lives are lost as a result of people making the choice to venture into flooded creeks and causeways.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service area commander for Toowoomba Paul Evans said firefighters across south western Queensland responded to 59 water related incidents last storm and cyclone season, with 43 of those occurring in the Toowoomba area.

"In most cases, swift water rescue is completely preventable and I encourage all residents across Toowoomba to familiarise themselves with their local area and develop an understanding of where they could potentially be caught off guard by floodwaters," Mr Evans said.

"Main areas of concern include the bridges over the storm water drains and the identified creeks within Toowoomba - East Creek; West Creek; Gowrie Creek and Black Gully, Warrego Hwy especially the intersection of James and Kitchener Sts Toowoomba, Bridge St, New England Hwy at Hodgsonvale area and causeways between Toowoomba and Dalby along the Warrego Hwy.

"Members of the community who visit Toowoomba's Grand Central Shopping Centre and access the undercover parking area off Dent St need to be aware the Dent St entrance may become impassable in severe storm conditions.

"Community members are advised to familiarise themselves with the other exits from the centre car park enabling them to exit the car park at a safer higher level.

"Each year people carelessly decide to enter many swollen creeks and waterways on foot.

"A number of areas of concern within the Toowoomba and surrounding community include the open storm water causeways, especially within the Toowoomba City boundaries.

"Storm water drains when backed-up can be deadly.
