  • Flash flood in Jalan Semarak (Kuala Lumpur) area of Malaysia (UPDATED 12/15/2011)
    -Flash floods occurred in Jalan Raja Chulan, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Sultan Ismail and Bukit Bintang car park area
    -A portion of the road in front of the National Library is flooded
    -Yesterday 20 students of a multimedia college were evacuated. Fire and Rescue Department personnel used boats to ferry the students from their college in Jalan Semarak to safer ground
    -The situation is under control now
  • Flash Flood in Nelson-Tasman region of New Zealand (UPDATED 12/15/2011)
    -A state of emergency has already been declared in the Nelson-Tasman region

  • M 7.1 very strong earthquake in Lae, Papua New Guinea. Strong earthquakes are relatively common in Papua New Guinea. But today's quake is first over magnitude 7 since 2005
  • Fire Killed 6 people in Marseille  city of France.
    -Six people died and 15 were overcome by smoke when fire broke out overnight in a care home for the elderly in the southern French city of Marseille
    -Three of those suffering from smoke inhalation are in serious condition
  • Hailstorm in Nkhata Bay district of Malawi injured 11 people. -The injured people are currently receiving treatment at Nkhata Bay District Hospital and Chilambwe Health Center
    -Most people in the
    Nkhata area depend on agriculture to feed their families. They are hard hit and worried about future.

  • M 7.1 Very strong earthquake in Eastern New Guinea Region, Papua New Guinea. The great depth (@ 115 km depth) has somewhat reduce its affect but, the great magnitude will definitely cause strong tremor around epicenter.   • M 5.2 moderate earthquake in Gifu-ken Mino-tobu region, Eastern Honshu, Japan .USGS gives data as M 4.9 @ 50.6 km depth. Since JMA is more reliable (regarding Japan, Gifu  earthquake) so we are following it. MAx. JMA intensity is 4. It is enough to be well felt around epicenter. People of Tajimi (pop 107,818) and Mizunami (pop 42,617) will experience strong jolt. These are the places within 10 km radius. It will felt as light to weak in Vast area.

Recent Volcanic Eruptions 


  • Volcanic activity in Kolumbus submarine volcano (Santorini, Greece)
    -At 19h22 GMT (21h22 local time), a 3.2 earthquake occurred following the largest event in recent months. At the end of November too, Seismic activity beneath Santorini volcano was slightly above normal level. Santorini's last eruption was in 1950
    -No more news flashed about the current activity. May be because of great tourist place. Santorini was named “Best World’s Island” in 2011 by BBC Travel

  • Thailand Flood- Death Toll has risen to 708
    Talking about the Southern Part, 10 people are confirmed dead
    (one in Nakhon Si Thammarat, two each in Phatthalung, Songkhla and Yala, and three in Narathiwat).

  • Flash flood in Guernsey, Europe-It has caused travel disruption and some structural damage.The worst of the weather is in Jersey
  • Flood in Mayo region (Yukon Territor), Canada
    -Emergency officials in Yukon have reactivated some emergency flood diversion ditches near Mayo to prevent flooding in the community
    -About $200,000 has been spent on flood prevention work so far this year
  • Deadly Flash flood Predicted in New Zealand
    - Metservice has issued severe weather warnings for many areas in the North and South Islands, as a front moves in from the Tasman Sea
    -Large amounts of rain are likely today and early tomorrow for Westland and Buller, Marlborough, and for Nelson where as much as 400mm of rain may fall about the northwest ranges
    UPDATE

    -A state of emergency has been declared in the Nelson-Tasman region, New zealand
    -Civil Defence is advising people to keep a watch on water levels and to be prepared to evacuate if necessary today night
    -The Maitai River in Nelson has overflowed. Several roads in the region are closed
    -People are advised to stay at home and away from floodwaters
    -Waters are expected to peak about 2am on Thursday
  • Flash flood in Bulawayo city of Zimbabwe 
    -Heavy rain and strong wind cause destruction in Lobengula West, Gwabalanda and Nkulumane suburbs
    -The wind was so strong that it uprooted trees and destroyed a gate in Gwabalanda

  • M 6.1 strong harmless Sea quake in Sulawesi, Indonesia (Tombulilata, Minahasa) with epicenter 68 km S of Gorontalo, Sulawesi, Indonesia. The large depth (@ 160.9 km depth) of earthquake has reduced its effect. About 1,909,000 people will experience light shaking. It will be lightly felt in vast area. People of Gorontalo and Luwuk, Indonesia will feel light shaking of MMI IV. Weak shaking will be experienced in Tondano, Manado, Tomohon, Bitung, Laikit, Laikit II (Dimembe), Poso region.       Major Disaster Report

      • 94 people are reported to be dead till now in the fire that broke out in Advanced Medical Research Institute hospital yesterday  in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta (Kolkata). Hospital officials were slow to call the Fire Department, and then fire trucks were slow to arrive, hospital officials said.
        Patients, many of them bedridden, had no way to escape. The mirrored glass windows did not open. The facade of the building was made of thick glass, which firefighters struggled to break. Finally, they used a ladder to reach an upper floor, where they were able to break the glass and vent some of the smoke. But by then it was 7:30 a.m., and the fire had been pouring smoke into the hospital for almost four hours.

        Its trauma surgery unit was said to be one of the best in eastern India, as well as its highly efficient emergency room

      • Fire in Jorpati, Nepal has caused heavy damage to property. However no fatality is reported. The fire broke out in a copy industry Saturday night which is supposed too cause due to short circuit. Instantly gas explode with huge sound. The rescue team immediately handle the situation. It is populated near to capital Kathmandu.

      Today's Disaster Report


      •  An active volcano in Kagoshima Prefecture (Kyushu), Mt. Sakurajima, explosively erupted late Thursday. The volcano has had a record number of explosive eruptions each year since 2009. The current volcanic eruption is 897th time this year. This volcano is expected to be extremely active in January or February
      • Class 2 warnings is issued for Gävleborg and Västernorrland in eastern and northern Sweden, which are expected to be worst hit by a storm expected. Class 2 warning means there is danger to the public, widespread material damage, and significant disruptions to important civic operations. Wind gusts of up to 86 kilometers an hour are also expected to lash Skåne, Halland, Blekinge and Öland in the south.
      • An earthquake in Rakhine State has caused underground water temperatures to rise, setting off volcano eruptions of mud and small amounts of lava. A mud volcano erupted on November 26 on a small hill one mile west of Bawyabaya village, about 32 miles from Kyaukphyu. The eruption sent magma and lava 15-feet into the air, and about 5 acres of nearby land was covered by magma.
        By evening, the eruptions had subsided, said local residents 
      • Strong winds and heavy snowfalls will snarl traffic in south-western Finland on Friday as a winter storm hits the coast. The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has issued a storm warning, and thousands of households have already lost power. Some 7,500 households are suffering blackouts in southern and south-western Finland 
      • Violent storm force winds battered Ireland today, causing chaos for commuters. The gales brought down trees and led to some flooding in conditions worse than Hurricane Katia last September. The “destructive” winds howled from early today and reached speeds of up to 130kph, knocking over bins and blowing debris around the capital. Drivers and pedestrians were warned to be wary of loose debris and the possibility of falling trees as conditions worsened throughout the morning. And while the gales are to ease tonight, Met Eireann predicted they would return again next week. Christmas shoppers were left to cling on to their bags as winds whipped violently through Dublin and other parts of the country. AA Roadwatch called on drivers to “take extra care” on exposed routes, particularly those in high-sided vehicles. “It's already stormy through parts of Leinster affecting Dublin, Wicklow Town and Tullamore in Co Offaly,” AA said this morning. The gales reached speeds not seen since the tail end of Hurricane Katia hit the country last September. Met Eireann blamed the conditions on “a violent storm in our sea area”. 
      • 88 people died today by the fire that broke out in a hospital in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta (Kolkata). Upset and angry relatives destroyed hospital property shouting slogans against authorities for not having enough fire safety measures. The fire had also engulfed the ICU and relatives claim that they were the ones who rescued most patients and that help arrived much later. The hospital announced that the family of those who have died will be paid Rs 5 lakh as compensation. Reports said many bodies were moved to SSKM hospital. Fire Services Minister Javed Khan said the fire spread because of stocks of highly combustible material

        ”Mount_Gamalama_Volcanic_Eruption”
      • Official report issued mentioned that as many as 2,209 people are taking refuge due to volcanic eruption of Mount Gamalama in Indonesia's North Maluku province as of Thursday.Current Danger status of the volcano is at level III. However there is no any report of damage or losses by this disaster. The video of Mount Gamalama by Reuters clearly shows the volcanic activity and the panicked people.

      Recent Floods

      • Orange flood Alert in Columbia with severity class 2 (i.e. this is an extreme event with an estimated recurrence interval greater than 100 years). Reports indicate that 486 person(s) have been killed and 80000 have been displaced. The flood affected a region of approximately 57194.3 km2. Damage has been reported in Manizales, Caldes area.
      • Three more natural disaster zones have been declared in northern NSW (Australia) after heavy rain and flooding. The communities of Uralla, Guyra and Glen Innes Severn were heavily impacted by the recent storms and flooding. The announcement follows natural disaster declarations for Moree Plains, Inverell and Armidale/Gunnedah, Narrabri, Gwydir, Muswellbrook, Liverpool Plains, Tamworth and the Upper Hunter Shire Council
